Bonfire

Chilled air biting soft skin nipping goosebumps a feverish rash spreading numbed noses but ignited feelings burning into hearts hotter brighter that flames with oil cores wind lashes bare limbs begging for the touch of another to soothe restless souls whose passion roars like caged lions waiting for the time to escape

Holidays

Endings always bring beginnings but what if it never ends the story doesn't stop but merely pauses and picks back up each passing year a continuing narrative of a chapter we first assumed were their own novellas do we ever escape our pasts or simply live in its current version a record skipping not starting a new tune but continuing onward until death marching forward like soldiers until the ground gives way to sea drowning each in personal perils the 7 minutes of past becoming present forced to watch the film until the lights go out

Athazagoraphobia

Do you remember it when this ink was new and your scar was fresh when gas money and football games were all on our minds the curfews the stolen nights when water beneath our kayaks was the only reason our faces were wet that tree swings  and rail bridges  were our high can you see it the rattling tracks above as we were together below it game nights beneath stadium lights goals and  penalties wins and  losses being the only games we played fire burning both flesh and hearts white dresses and black ties twinkling lights and sparkling eyes it feels like yesterday you met my momma and daddy then becoming part of my family all at once like a missing puzzle piece  in a picture neither of us could put together it feels like yesterday that it was me and you

Past

I reread the last pages of a chapter long since written thinking about you I was the Bonnie  wild for my Clyde running through the west into our mind's sunset always moving forward never able to stand back  to watch for the fall that broke our necks

Me

I'm not your little lady love A soft and white delicate dove Don't put me in your dresses of silk Doted in ribbons, frills, and bows Expecting me to behave Is like telling the tides Not to swell and sink Don't put me in your chains Or your pretty gilded golden cages I won't sing for you sweetly Or dance to the sweet music Echoing in your daydream You won't break me Or who I am I'm made of cigarette smoke I'm made of freshly tilled soil I have blood of iron and whiskey A concocted mix of liquor and spite  Pumping through my veins Beneath beaten flesh Hidden by leather and denim My boots have trodden many miles Lighter sparking conversations along the way Never here nor there Moving constantly From bed to bed Home to home I'm a roaming wolf Howling into the night for those who I have lost Searching for a resting place Here one day  Gone the next I'm the girl with fists of steel Always...

Dice

Roll the dice Play the game Quiet hopes to win But outcomes stay the same We spin in circles Never ceasing To reach the same conclusions Reloading the gun With the old empty shells Only to spin in the chamber Yes No Love Hate Rapidly moving targets Trying to solve the same problems With ineffective solutions Hoping we might escape

Leather Smokes

Soft Worn lining of a loved bomber Once sleek leather Now dull with years Within the pocket An ancient pack of smokes Crumbling Smelling of age Scratched metal lighter Still clicking open To reveal a delicate flame Dancing within A crumpled gas station receipt Too faded to read Reminding of memories that don't belong to you An ancient polaroid Gingerly hiding in the bottom Revealing friendly faces The inside seam Caressing the spine Lined with sweat With my heart Resting in the breast pocket Next to your's Putting it on each day To remember your past When each day You move towards the future
